September 16, Thursday, 7:00 PM - Book Club
Religious passions are again driving world politics. The quest to bring political life under God's authority has been revived, confounding expectations of a secular future. In this major book, Mark Lilla reveals the sources of this age-old quest -- and its surprising role in shaping Western thought. Join the HFSD Book Club as we
discuss, The Stillborn God: Religion, Politics, and the Modern West. For details, click here!
September 18, Saturday, 11:00 AM - Picnic!
The Humanist Fellowship of San Diego is joining with the SD New Atheists and Agnostics, and 10 other member groups of the San Diego Coalition of Reason for a Community Picnic!
There will be plenty to eat...barbeque, sides, desserts...plenty to drink (BYOB), and opportunities to show off your frisbee and volleyball skills! It will be lots of fun and an opportunity to become acquainted with people from the other local secular organizations. Bring your friends...the more the merrier! For the latest announcements, sign-up at Meetup.com.
September 26, Sunday, 2:00 PM - Humanist Huddle/Film THE CORPORATION
At today's Humanist Huddle we will show the first part of the DVD The Corporation, winner of 26 International Awards and 10 Audience Choice Awards including the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.
Provoking, witty, stylish and sweepingly informative, THE CORPORATION explores the nature and spectacular rise of the dominant institution of our time. Part film and part movement, The Corporation is transforming audiences and dazzling critics with its insightful and compelling analysis. Taking its status as a legal "person" to the logical conclusion, the film puts the corporation on the psychiatrist's couch to ask "What kind of person is it?" The Corporation includes interviews with 40 corporate insiders and critics - including Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein, Milton Friedman, Howard Zinn, Vandana Shiva and Michael Moore - plus true confessions, case studies and strategies for change.
The film is based on the book The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power by Joel Bakan.
October 27, Wednesday 7:00 PM, Lecture and Book Signing with Sam Harris
The author of The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason and Letter to a Christian Nation, Sam Harris will be speaking about his new book, The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values, on October 27th at 7:00 PM at the UCSD Price Center Ballroom.
The leaders of the secular student group Rational Thought at UCSD are to be congratulated for having arranged his appearance. Dr. Harris has agreed to waive his usual $25,000 speaker’s fee provided there is no charge for admission. Unfortunately, there are numerous expenses associated with such a large event. Along with other humanist, atheist, and skeptic groups in the San Diego area, the Humanist Fellowship of San Diego will be doing what we can to make sure that Rational Thought at UCSD can cover the $2000 in costs.
We need your help! We hope to raise $100 to ensure the success of this event. Your donations to the HFSD in $3 increments can be collected via Paypal when you RSVP for this event on our Meetup.com website (www.meetup.com/humanistfellowship). You may also submit donations by Paypal at our website www.hfsd.info. Monies collected will first be applied toward our $100 commitment to Rational Thought at UCSD. If we are fortunate to receive contributions in excess of $100, they will be used to defray operating expenses of the Fellowship.
We will be announcing instructions on how you can secure your FREE tickets to this lecture (through the UCSD Box Office) as soon as we get the details from Rational Thought at UCSD. An RSVP on Meetup does not guarantee you a ticket, it is simply a means to collect donations.
Would you like to guarantee a ticket NOW? The first 10 people to donate a minimum of $12 to HFSD will receive one ticket via snail-mail. This offer can be accessed through our Meetup website or here through our Donations page.
