Mens sana in corpore sano
At the Humanists' table, Gary Linscott (San Diego Skeptics) with visitors Melissa Chaty (Miss California 2007) and Doneice Woody, organizer of the "San Diego Live Healthy Expo 2009"
Yes, it's a Humanist issue.
Humanists don't agree with those who say mind and body are separate.
Humanists say your body is inseparable from your mind - otherwise known as your "psyche," or "soul." We want health and freedom from toxic pollution whether it's by harmful chemicals or false beliefs.
We reject dualism.
What's dualism? Glad you asked. Dualism is a Greek metaphysical concept. St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, says in his Spiritual Exercises (#1541) " ... chastise your body. .... Inflict pain on it. Wear a hair shirt. Tie cords or chains on your body. Scourge yourself with a whip."
Dualists allege that it's good for you to make your body suffer for the sake of your soul. Nonsense, say Humanists. Soul, mind, body - it's all one. Take care of it. Keep it healthy. Be happy!
Mental hygiene and physical health go together.
Health of mind, health of body. Don't try to separate them.
Terence's mens sana in corpore sano is a Humanist saying. Healthy mind, healthy body.
You can do a lot to protect your health. And you can win your freedom from superstitious delusions that pollute your mind.
